Austin police identify woman hit, killed by truck after walking across I-35

Austin police said a woman was killed after she was hit by a semi-truck while trying to cross I-35.

AUSTIN — The Austin Police Department is investigating after a woman in her 30s was hit and killed by a semi-truck while she was attempting to cross Interstate 35 in North Austin Tuesday morning.

Austin police said the crash happened in the 8200 block of I-35 near the U.S. Highway 183 flyover just before 1:20 a.m. Police said the woman, identified as Stefanie Marie Torres, 38, was attempting to cross the highway from east to west when she was hit and killed by a truck tractor that was traveling northbound.

Torres died at the scene.

Authorities said the driver cooperated at the scene and charges aren't expected in this case.

Police said they're warning people not to walk across the interstate and are urging people to use underpasses or overpasses to safely get around the busy highway.

"It's too dangerous," officials said.
