Man killed in Bastrop County crash identified

A Houston man was killed in a crash involving two 18-wheelers in Bastrop County near Lee County, the Department of Public Safety said Monday evening.

<p>According to Frank Smith with the Giddings Times & News, first responders worked to rescue the driver out from under the wreck as the roadway was closed.</p>

A Houston man was killed in a crash involving two 18-wheelers in Bastrop County near Lee County, the Department of Public Safety said Monday evening.

The crash shut down U.S. 290 in both directions shortly after 5 a.m. Monday. DPS said "for some unknown reason," the driver of (one of the 18-wheelers) crossed the center strip and struck the other vehicle. DPS did not say which 18-wheeler crossed the center line, but said Pascual Rueda-Orozco, 42, of Houston died at the scene. The driver of the other truck, a 63-year-old Smithville man, was taken to University Medical Center-Brackenridge.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
