"What we tell people is you don't want to stop the medicine right away; you definitely want to have a conversation with your doctor," said Dr. Gladys Weng with Baylor Scott and White.

She also suggested patients check in with their pharmacist.

"Most pharmacies actually have a very active survey list to find those people that have the potentially affected prescriptions," Weng said.

She explained there are some issues with a few of the manufacturers of blood pressure medications. Weng said they're finding "trace elements of potential carcinogens," an agent that can potentially lead to cancer.

"The thing is those medications are lifesaving medications," said Weng. "And the risks of not taking a high blood pressure medicine, such as potentially having a stroke or a heart attack, is so much worse than possibly having a chance at being exposed to something that might have cancer."

She suggested people talk to their doctors to find out if their medicine is the one affected. If so, she said to ask about switching to a medication that may be safer.
