Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski can be heard scolding Oregon forward Dillon Brooks after Thursday’s NCAA Sweet 16 game in new footage broadcast by CBS.
"You’re too good a player to do that," Krzyzewski can be heard saying as he met Brooks in the handshake line after Oregon’s 82-68 victory. "You’re too good of a player."
Host Greg Gumbel said before the clip aired Friday night that the CBS cameras only caught "a portion" of the exchange, and you can see Krzyzewski appeared to say something before the microphone began to pick up the conversation. USA TODAY Sports reported earlier Friday that a professional lip reader backed up Brooks' assertion that Krzyzewski lectured him.
Krzyzewski seemed to take issue with Brooks' uncontested three-point attempt in the final seconds. Brooks celebrated with a fist pump.
"Yeah, I just congratulated him," Krzyzewski said in the postgame news conference. "I said, 'You’re a terrific player.' "
And this from the NCAA transcript:
Q. Apparently after the game Dillon said that you told him that he was too good of a player to be showing off at the end like that --
MIKE KRZYZEWSKI: I didn't say that.
Q. He said of you that you were right.
MIKE KRZYZEWSKI: You can say whatever you want. Dillon Brooks is a hell of a player. I said, "You're a terrific player." And you can take whatever he said and then go with it, all right?
And this was Brooks' account after the game: "He just told me that I’m too good of a player to be showing out at the end. And he’s right. I’ve got to respect Duke."
