HONOLULU — Authorities say the remains of six people have been found after a helicopter heading to one of the most rugged and remote coastlines in Hawaii crashed at the top of a mountain on the island of Kauai.
Officials said Friday that there is no indication that anyone survived the crash.
A search began for the helicopter carrying a pilot and six passengers from two families after it was reported overdue from a tour Thursday evening.
The chopper's owner called for help about 45 minutes after the flight was due back from a tour of Kauai's Na Pali Coast on Thursday evening, authorities said.
The Coast Guard said two of the passengers are believed to be minors.
A search for the last person yet to be recovered would resume in the morning, depending on weather, officials said to The Associated Press. Those who were recovered have not been identified and their families are being notified, authorities said.
Wreckage of the tour helicopter had been found as the Coast Guard was searching Friday following its disappearance.
Steep terrain, low visibility, choppy seas and rain complicated the search. The helicopter has an electronic locator, but no signals were being received.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says the Eurocopter took off from the town of Lihue.
