PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- A new Department of Public Safety Driver s License Mega Center opened Tuesday morning.
The Pflugerville office is located off Wells Branch Parkway near Heatherwilde Boulevard. It is designed to accommodate hundreds of customers a day.
The Department of Public Safety unveiled the new office Monday in a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The building stretches out approximately 24,000 square feet. It includes 22 customer service stations and will employee 36 full time employees. DPS expects to serve about 700 customers a day at the Pflugerville office. It s designed to alleviate the congestion and wait times that have gradually gotten worse over the years.
Over the last decade or so we have seen our population increase significantly, and consequently we've seen the number of transactions at our driver's licenses offices increase as well, explained Public Safety Commission Chair Cynthia Leon.
The mega center also includes new technology including a virtual check-in system. Instead of waiting in line customers can get in line by checking in with their cell phone, online or using a land line.
Through the virtual check-in customers can adjust their place in line. For instance, a customer who is running late can push back their place in line. Walk-in customers are still accepted. They ll be allowed to use a self-check-in kiosk. Doing so allows them to check-in, then leave and return for their scheduled appointment.
The doors at the Pflugerville Office opened at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The building is one of six DPS Mega Centers opening statewide. Along with the Pflugerville office, two more are going up in the Dallas region, another two in Houston and one in San Antonio.
The rest will open between now and January 2013.
