Pilots in UPS plane crash died of blunt force trauma

The medical examiner has shared some more information in the deadly plane crash last month that killed a pilot from Matthews.

The medical examiner says both pilots, including Cerea Beal, 58, of Matthews, died of blunt force trauma when their UPS plane crashed in Birmingham. The second pilot, 37-year-old Shanda Fanning, is from Lynchburg, Tennessee.

The coroner's report also rules out the idea that a medical problem caused the crash.

Beal had been with UPS since 1990 and served more than six years in the Marines as a heavy lift helicopter pilot. Fanning had been with UPS since 2006.

Both pilots died in the crash, but there was nobody else aboard the jet and no injuries on the ground.

The NTSB is still continuing their investigation.
