AUSTIN, Texas — A man suspected of stealing cars in northwest Austin was shot by officers after he fired in their direction, Austin Police Department (APD) Chief Lisa Davis said Thursday.
APD said just before 10 a.m. Thursday that officers were responding to a shooting in the 9500 block of North FM 620, near the MAA Canyon Creek apartments. APD said the call initially came in as an Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
In an update Thursday morning, Chief Davis said around 3 a.m., a man allegedly stole a car from a worker at the Starbucks at Four Points, then carjacked another person at a nearby H-E-B.
Davis said officers found the second stolen car at the MAA Canyon Creek apartment complex. The suspect allegedly broke into an apartment there and when officers tried to apprehend him, he ran off, leading officers to chase him.
Davis said during that chase, the suspect fired at officers so they returned fire, hitting and killing him. No officers were injured in the incident.
No additional information is available at this time, but APD plans to provide another media briefing Friday. This article will be updated when we learn more.
