Man suffering mental health crisis injured in South Austin police shooting, APD says

The incident happened in the 1100 block of Brecon Lane, near the intersection of Menchaca and West Dittmar roads.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department is investigating after a man was injured in a police shooting in South Austin on Saturday morning.

The incident happened at 1124 Brecon Lane, near the intersection of Menchaca and West Dittmar roads, according to APD.

At around 9:24 a.m., a 911 caller reported a man at the house, identified as 49-year-old Christophe Vanover, was suffering from a mental health crisis, cutting his wrists and severely bleeding, police said. Officers arrived on the scene around 9:31 a.m. and made contact with the 911 caller outside the house.

According to police, when officers entered the house, Vanover called out and pointed a gun at them. One officer deployed his Taser, which APD said was "ineffective." Both officers then fired their guns at Vanover, striking him.

During the gunfire, Vanover reportedly moved and hid from the officers. Around that time, two additional APD officers who are mental health officers arrived on the scene and made entry to the house. At around 9:45 a.m., APD SWAT was called to the scene.

Officers were able to locate Vanover at 9:49 a.m. and take him into custody. Austin-Travis County EMS transported the man to a local hospital. He is currently in a stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Vanover is charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, a first-degree felony.

No other civilians or officers were injured during the incident.

The shooting was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras and, per APD policy, will be released within 10 business days.

One of the officers who fired their gun has five years and 11 months of service with the department, while the other officer has 11 years and nine months of service. As part of APD protocol, both officers have been placed on administrative duty.

APD will be conducting two concurrent investigations: a criminal investigation conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's Office and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit and the Office of Police Oversight.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact APD at 512-974-6840 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at AustinCrimeStoppers.org.

No other information is available at this time.
