AUSTIN, Texas — Police officer licenses can now be looked up in Texas.

In a change in policy regarding police transparency, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) has released its online lookup tool, allowing the public to view the status of both active and former peace officers across the state.

Officer licenses can now be checked like most other licensed jobs in the state with public lookups. Jobs like these include doctors, nurses, plumbers and electricians, and a number of others.

Previously, acquiring the records required submitting a formal request through the Texas Public Information Act.

Information in the database includes records of training, license issue date, training compliance and education information. No private or personal information is available, nor is any information regarding undercover work.

The license lookup tool can be found here. An account must be created to access the portal.
