President Donald Trump stated on Axios on HBO Tuesday morning that he has intentions to end birthright citizenship with an executive order -- which could lead to a court battle about whether the president can change a constitutional amendment.
Texas Democrats have been condemning the president's statements.
U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett stated that an executive order would not lead to a change to the Constitution.
“The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution mandates that ‘all persons born’ in the U.S. are U.S. citizens. While Trump may once again think he can ignore our Constitution and rule by Executive Order, he can be restrained. Even a Republican-dominated Supreme Court cannot change ‘all’ into ‘some’ or deny that refugees are people," Rep. Doggett said. "The Master of Distraction continues to foment bigotry to distract from his failed agenda, hoping his base rhetoric will motivate his base."
Democratic Nominee for Governor Lupe Valdez said, "We are a nation of immigrants and anyone born on this soil is an American. Our immigrant community is vital to the Texas economy -- they are our small business owners, our teachers, our first responders and our neighbors."
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said, "If you're born in America, you're an American. Period. This is yet another desperate attempt from Donald Trump to divide and incite fear."
As of yet, no major Texas Republican leaders have released statements on the president's comments.
