AUSTIN, Texas — A group of Texas lawmakers charged with studying the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) met for the first time on Monday.

The five state representatives on the House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies listened as experts and members of the public gave testimony on the ways AI is integrated into our everyday lives and the potential security risks that come along with the emerging technology.

To display the power of AI, the committee used an AI script-writing tool and AI voice cloning technology to deliver the opening statements during Monday's hearing.

"Artificial intelligence is transforming our world, often unprecedented opportunities but also presenting new challenges," an AI voice trying to mimic Chairman Giovanni Capriglione (R-Southlake) said. "It's crucial that we as policymakers provide the necessary guardrails to ensure that these technologies enhance our lives while protecting our values."

The other members of the committee are Reps. Jeff Leach, Oscar Longoria, Angelia Orr and Armando Walle.

The committee has until May 16 to submit its initial report.
