'Change minds and laws' | Abortion opponents march to Capitol for 'Texas Rally for Life'

AUSTIN, Texas — Abortion opponents celebrated legislative wins on the Texas Capitol grounds on Saturday afternoon.

Hundreds of people showed up for the “Texas Rally for Life,” which started with a march to the Capitol at 1 p.m., followed by a rally on the south steps and a “pro-life expo.” The event included several speakers.

Opponents told KVUE even with the overturning of Roe vs. Wade last year, they believe there is work to do.

"I think it’s really important that we have events like this so we spread awareness and help change minds and laws," abortion opponent Emily Stanley said.

Earlier this week, an Austin abortion rights supporter headlined a Virginia campaign event for President Joe Biden on reproductive rights. Amanda Zurawski spoke about her experience trying to get an abortion.

She said as difficult as it was for the couple to get pregnant, at 18 weeks she had complications. Due to Texas abortion laws, her doctor had to wait until Amanda's life was in danger to perform the procedure.

"After stabilizing my vitals enough to deliver our baby, Willow, I crashed again with another bout of sepsis and was transferred to the ICU," she said. "I was there for three days. My family flew in from across the country for fear that I wouldn't pull through. It was in that dark and lonely hospital room where I realized that I was actually lucky I lived. Others wouldn't be so lucky."

Zurawski's story was a part the president and vice president's first campaign rally of 2024, focused on abortion rights.
