AUSTIN, Texas — Did you forget to register before Election Day? Well, you might be out of luck.
If you want to vote in Texas, you have to register at least 30 days before Election Day. To do so, you can fill out an application and mail it in at least 30 days before go to the polls.
According to VoteTexas.gov, you are eligible to vote if:
- You are a U.S. citizen.
- You are currently a resident in the county where you submit your application.
- You are at least 17 years and 10 months old, and you are 18 years old on Election Day.
- You are not a convicted felon. However, you may be eligible to vote if you have completed your sentence, probation and parole.
- You have not been declared by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be either totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.
Now, you may be wondering, "Am I registered to vote?" Well, if you know your Texas driver's license number, or your Voter Unique Identifier Number that appears on your voter registration certificate, or your first and last name, you can find out by clicking here.
It's also important to note that when you head to the polls, you will need to bring one form of valid identification. The following are acceptable forms of ID:
- Texas Driver License issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
- Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
- Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
- Texas Handgun License issued by DPS
- United States Military Identification Card containing the person’s photograph
- United States Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
- United States Passport (book or card)
And, if you don't have one of the forms listed above, you can bring one of the following in order to execute a Reasonable Impediment Declaration:
- Copy or original of a government document that shows the voter’s name and an address, including the voter’s voter registration certificate
- Copy of or original current utility bill
- Copy of or original bank statement
- Copy of or original government check
- Copy of or original paycheck
- Copy of or original of (a) a certified domestic (from a U.S. state or territory) birth certificate or (b) a document confirming birth admissible in a court of law which establishes the voter’s identity (which may include a foreign birth document)
