AUSTIN, Texas — Texas voters will have to wait a little longer to choose State Sen. Kirk Watson's replacement.
On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott issued a proclamation postponing the special election for Texas Senate District 14 to Tuesday, July 14. The special election would ordinarily be held on Saturday, May 2, but Gov. Abbott postponed it due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The governor's office said it is continuing to consult with the Secretary of State's office on additional strategies to ensure public health in relation to any upcoming election.

According to his office, pursuant to Section 418.016 of the Texas Government Code, Gov. Abbott has the express authority to suspend the provisions of the Texas Election Code or any other "regulatory statute prescribing the procedures for conduct of state business or the orders or rules of a state agency" if strict compliance would cause issues in regards to a disaster declaration.
Candidates who wish to be included on the special election ballot for Texas Senate District 14 must file their applications with the Secretary of State beginning April 19 and no later than 5 p.m. on May 13. Early voting for the special election will begin on Monday, June 29.
