Democrats Christine Eady Mann, Donna Imam advance to runoff against Republican John Carter in Texas 31

Democrat MJ Hegar came within three points of Carter in the 2018 race.

AUSTIN, Texas — Democrats Christine Eady Mann and Donna Imam will advance to a runoff election in May after getting 35% and 31% of the vote, respectively, in Texas’s 31st congressional district’s primary election on Tuesday.

Whoever wins the runoff on May 26 will be up against Republican incumbent John Carter, who won Tuesday’s primary against three Republican challengers, with 82% of the vote.

Six Democrats ran in Tuesday’s primary:

  • Christine Eady Mann, 35%
  • Donna Imam, 31%
  • Tammy Young, 14%
  • Michael Edward Grimes, 11%
  • Eric Hanke, 6%
  • Dan Janjigian, 4%

Carter has served as the representative for the district since its creation in 2002, making it one of two districts in Texas that has never had a representative from the Democratic Party.

In 2018, Carter survived a race against Democrat MJ Hegar, winning by just three points. Hegar is running for Senate this time around, on Tuesday advancing to the May runoff.

Christine Eady Mann, 54, was the runner-up in the 2018 Democratic primary runoff against Hegar.

Whoever wins May’s runoff will be hoping to repeat Hegar’s strong performance and then some, but they’ll face an uphill battle ahead. The district, which includes Williamson County and the fast-growing suburbs of North Austin, as well as a portion of the area around Fort Hood, leans around 10 points Republican on average, according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index.
