Sen. John Cornyn speaks out about 2020 Senate election

FORT WORTH, Texas — On Tuesday evening, KVUE hosted a debate between 11 of the 12 Democratic candidates who are vying for Sen. John Cornyn's U.S. Senate seat. But Cornyn is also facing opposition from his own party in the 2020 Texas primary election.

Dwayne Stovall, John Anthony Castro, Mark Yancey and Virgil Bierschwale are all running on the Republican side.

Cornyn's campaign manager sent KVUE a statement Tuesday night, just as the Democratic debate got started, saying, "In a race that's been called 'sleepy,' 'boring' and a 'six-car pileup,' it's no wonder Texas Democrats are tuned out. With 'undecided' as their leading candidate, we'll be ready for whichever Bernie Sanders clone limps out of the primary on Memorial Day."

Cornyn visited a pharmacy in Fort Worth on Tuesday, promoting a bill he sponsored which he says will lower prescription drug prices. He also took questions about the Democratic debate and his potential challengers.

"I've got a record that I'm happy to run on. I'm proud of the work we've been able to do on everything from addressing high prescription drug costs, dealing with the anti-human trafficking efforts and eliminating the rape kit backlog, things like that," Cornyn said.

Cornyn said since the election this year is expected to have such a high turnout, he knows it's important for him to get out and talk with voters.

"We need to focus not only on primaries but the general election too, and to make sure that we reach out and listen to the concerns by people who are moving here or perhaps haven't lived here," Cornyn said.

Early voting in Texas started Tuesday and wraps up Friday, Feb. 28. Super Tuesday is March 3. Polling sites are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information about early voting, check out the KVUE early voting guide.
