What to know as the March primary election approaches

Election Day for the primary is March 5.

AUSTIN, Texas — The deadline to vote in the March primary is Monday, Feb. 5.

In order to register, a person must complete a voter registration application and return it a county election office at least 30 days prior to the election. Texans can update their voter registration information online at VoteTexas.gov and can also register to vote when renewing their driver’s license.

"Expect smaller lines. The primaries are going to have much lower voting than general elections so expect smaller lines which is more convenient," said Brian Smith, a professor of political science at St. Edwards University.

While this election will not feature statewide races for governor, lieutenant governor or attorney general, there are still numerous key races on the ballot, including the presidential and U.S. Senate primaries for both parties.

"Who is going against Ted Cruz? We know he is going to get the Republican nomination. But for the Democrats, the question is whether U.S. Representative [Colin] Allred will earn the nomination at the March primary or [if there will be a] runoff later in the spring,” Smith said.

Sherry Bishop has been voting for years. She has been registered since she was 18 and encourages everyone to register to vote.

"A lovely thing about being an American citizen is going to vote and expressing your opinion and [choosing] your candidates, your bills and anything that involves your community,” Bishop said.
