AUSTIN -- It's a memorable day in Texas politics. One year ago, state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) stood in front of Texas lawmakers and delivered a nearly 13-hour filibuster. Her speech effectively delayed a controversial vote on abortion legislation and catapulted Davis to instant recognition.
On Wednesday, Democrats and Davis are marking the anniversary of that pivotal speech. They're commemorating the anniversary with a celebration in Austin.
Davis has said her filibuster was about showing strength to fight back against what she called an abuse of power. It inspired thousands of people across the state to join the fight. Thousands flocked to the Capitol. Those who dressed in orange showed support for Davis and abortion rights. Those in support of the legislation wore blue.
Despite her efforts, new abortion restrictions passed in a second special session.
Davis, however, celebrates that filibuster as a victory. It effectively launched her spotlight and paved her campaign path. She is now in the running for Texas Governor.
Davis will commemorate the anniversary with her running mate, lieutenant governor candidate Leticia Van de Putte (D). Wednesday's one-year anniversary celebration at the Palmer Event Center is expected to draw thousands to Austin. It will also stream to an estimated 200 watch parties across Texas.
