TILDEN, Texas -- Pioneer Natural Resources confirmed a second person passed away Saturday after an explosion at an oil well near Tilden.

The explosion also killed 50-year-old Roel Rodriguez and injured three other men.

The oil and gas production company runs the well site that caught fire last month. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Pioneer Natural Resources did not release the contractor's name who passed away over the weekend.

A man who survived the explosion said the fire was so intense no one could get close enough to the source of the fire for quite a while.

He took several pictures within 10 minutes of the explosion.

He said it sounded like someone turned on a propane gas grill but "one thousand times louder."

When he ran towards the injured men he found they were badly burned and "some of their clothing melted to their skin."

The worker spoke to KENS 5 on the condition we protect his identity for fear of repercussions on the job.

Along with several other people, he helped get the injured men to pickup trucks so they could be transported to the hospital.

All five men were airlifted to the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

The worker said despite what happened the well site emphasizes safety.

He acknowledges there is an inherent risk when working at an oil rig. He hopes by coming forward people get a better understanding of this.

"Be aware of what you can do in your everyday life at the job to make sure you are in a safe environment and making it a safe environment for everyone you are working with," he said.
