SAN MARCOS, Texas — In the last several days, there has been an increase in crime around or on the Texas State University campus that has affected students and inspired the university's police department to increase security measures around the school.
The armed robberies that occurred on Feb. 13 in the Blanco Parking Garage and early on Feb. 20 in Bobcat Village are actively being investigated by UPD, according to Chief Laurie Clouse from the University Police Department.
A student was also killed in an off-campus incident, which was reported to the police department on Feb. 13. This case was handled by off-campus authorities.
In a statement by Chief Clouse to the Bobcat community, he said "the university has authorized more positions to UPD and we are planning increased and new services to the campuses in the near future. More information will be available on these initiatives soon."
UPD officers will be available from 1 to 3 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 21, in the lobby of the Nueces Building to visit with students, faculty and staff to answer questions about safety.
Chief Clouse also gave a list of ways to stay safe on campus:
- Do not walk alone late at night. Use a buddy system and walk with a friend. You can also call 512-245-7233 to be accompanied by a Bobcat Bobbie or to ask for a Safety Escort from UPD.
- Stay alert. Always remain aware of your surroundings.
- Download and use the free Bobcat Guardian App that lets your friends and family know where you are and when you will arrive at your destination. Or use the share your location feature on your mobile device so others can know your whereabouts, especially when you are out at night.
- Violent crime is often associated with illegal drugs, including marijuana. Do not put yourself in situations that leave you exposed to criminals or criminal activity.
