'The Highwaymen' – A Texas-sized film on how two former Texas Rangers captured Bonnie and Clyde

This year at SXSW, Netflix held the premiere for their new film called The Highwaymen, which is a story on how two former Texas Rangers captured Bonnie and Clyde.

AUSTIN, Texas — A Texas-sized film, full of Texas history was premiered at SXSW on Sunday night. The new film is called The Highwaymen.

The movie is about how two former Texas Rangers, Frank Hamer and Maney Gault, captured two outlaws out of Dallas, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.

The movie was directed by John Lee Hancock and features some big-name stars, including Kevin Costner, Woody Harrelson and Kathy Bates.

Throughout the movie there are shots of Texas, showing beautiful landscapes and even a few shots depicting what Lady Bird Lake and the Congress Avenue bridge looked like in the early 1900s. When a newspaper is displayed in the Austin area you will see The Austin Statesman at the top, giving a shoutout to the paper still around in Austin.

John Lee Hancock stated he wanted to do this movie different from other movies about the Bonnie and Clyde crime spree. Rather than going into deep detail on the notorious outlaws, The Highwaymen is all about how Hamer and Gault came together to stop the crime spree.

Towards the end of the movie, they show the ambush used to capture Bonnie and Clyde

If you want to see the movie yourself, you can see it on Netflix starting March 29, 2019.

Netflix has turned a bar on Rainey Street, Bangers, in The Highwaymen House. The bar will be a 1934 inspired speakeasy filled with interactive experiences. You can check it out Monday and Tuesday night from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Below is a video where the director, producers, writers and some of the main actors and actresses talk about the film. WARNING: Some spoilers will be in the video.

During the weekend some of the actors hung out around Austin. Woody Harrelson was seen hanging out with a few Austin police officers.
