Monday evening, detectives with the Travis County Sheriff's Department released more details regarding a shooting death from early Sundaymorning involving one of the department'sown employees.
A woman living in the 500 block of Alva in Briarcliff called 911 Sunday morning to say that her husband, Chad Lum, 34,a TravisCounty corrections officer had shot and killed a man in their home. Lum is now charged with murder.
The victim is 46-year old Michael Rendon, Sr., a family friend who detectives say was with his children at the Lum's house for a sleepover Saturday night.
There's some family friends and children involved. It looks like some of the children of the victim and the suspect went to school together. It looked like there was a sleepover with some kids there and they were there just basically as family friends hanging out and it looks like it turned into a disturbance and somebody ended up getting shot, , said Travis County Sheriff's Department detective Alan Howard. It looks like...people had been up all night, intoxicated, a fight turned the wrong way and our heart goes out to the family of the decedent. This was not a premeditated thing that somebody thought about 'I've been trying to get this guy for a long time', it's just a people got intoxicated and it got out of hand.
Travis County Sheriff detectives don't believe that any of the Lum's children nor Rendon's children witnessed the shooting.
It's also believed that Lum used his personal weapon and not a Travis County-issued weapon, according to Howard.
Lum is being segregated from other prisoners at the Travis County Jail for his protection and detectives made a point of telling reporters that Lum is not receiving any preferential treatment.
As of Monday evening, he was in the Travis County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
