WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — Williamson County's M.J. Hegar is not out of the politics game yet.
After losing a seat in the U.S. House last year, the veteran often referred to as a war hero tweeted Tuesday that she might be eyeing a run against incumbent Republican U.S. Senator John Cornyn in the next election.
Hegar's tweet reads:
"I proudly served our country because I believe when there’s a job to do, you step up. We need someone to get to work for Texans in the US Senate – someone who will actually fight for our families. I’m taking a very close look at running. Stay tuned."
However, the Democrat is not the only one who has expressed interest in the race.
In March, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro's office released a statement making it clear the San Antonio Democrat was also considering campaigning.
"Congressman Castro will seriously consider running for Senate in 2020," the statement said. "Right now, he's focused on protecting Texans – and all Americans – from the most consequential challenge to our constitutional separation of powers that we have seen in a generation."
In the November 2018 election, Hegar narrowly lost the seat for District 31 to her competitor, John Carter, to represent Williamson and Bell Counties.
Hegar served as an Air Force helicopter pilot. After serving three tours in Afghanistan, she received a Purple Heart for sustaining injuries while being shot down by enemy fire. She was raised in the Leander/Cedar Park area.
