What are the plans for the Brackenridge Hospital property?

Central Health wants community members to be a part of those future plans moving forward.

AUSTIN, Texas — The community is invited to get an update about what will happen to the property that's currently home to a beloved building in Austin.

The University Medical Center Brackenridge Tower is part of the Brackenridge Hospital.

A group called Central Health owns this property and now they say because they realize how important it is to the community, they want to make sure everyone is kept up to date on what happens after it's torn down.

The tower has been there for half a century, standing along I-35 and 15th Street. The hospital itself has been there since 1884, so more than 100 years in that time serving thousands of patients, doctors and nurses.

Last week several of them came out to share their memories of the hospital, which closed in 2017. Those services were moved to Dell Seton Medical Center across the street.

Dr. Stephen Pont remembers his time working there in the 90s.

"I think it's important to remember the past and look towards the future," he said. "I think the critical mission of Brackenridge being the safety net hospital turning no one away by providing critical services to those most in need is an important thing that we must never forget."

The level one trauma center was a safety net for those who didn't have health insurance and now the 14-acre property will be used to help pay for health care for low-income patients in Travis County.

Central Health wants community members to be a part of those future plans moving forward.

The meeting will be Monday evening at the Central Health Board Room in Downtown Austin. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. RSVP is preferred. You can contact Central Health at communications@centralhealth.net.
