The Last Word: Include civic responsibility in your New Year's resolutions

Save money, stay fit – but also don't forget to vote and fill out the census form.

AUSTIN, Texas — As we begin this new year, a lot of us are filled with excitement and optimism. We have hope for the type of "fresh start" only a new year can bring.

And this new year promises to be filled with excitement – it's the "Roaring '20s" after all! But as you build those vision boards, set your intentions and mark your calendars, I want to ask that you to remember to resolve to get involved.

This year, you will have several opportunities for civic engagement.

The start of a new decade means there is a census, providing data that is critical to our country. It will take you all of 10 minutes to fill out the form – and this year, you can do it online!
