The Last Word: America's political partisanship is concerning

Ashley Goudeau says Americans should remember to be loyal to their country first.

AUSTIN, Texas — It doesn't matter how you feel about President Donald Trump or impeachment. The very fact that the country we love is going through this process is serious and solemn.

And the partisanship on full display by members of both political parties – the divisiveness that seems to be seeping into how we treat one another – concerns me.

We are Americans first. Loyal to our country first. And so, I want to remind you of something our first president, George Washington, said about political parties in his farewell address.

"May now and then answer popular ends – they are likely, in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government – destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."
