Texas State head coach's wife induced early so he could attend SBC Media Days

"I would not be here if it wasn't for her," GJ Kinne said of his wife, Summer.

NEW ORLEANS — Coaches thank their families – and especially their spouses – for their support all the time. But in the case of Texas State head coach GJ Kinne and Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Media Days, he really wouldn't have made it there without his wife.

During SBC Media Days in New Orleans on Wednesday, Kinne started his time behind the podium by thanking his wife, Summer. Why? Because she induced early, giving birth to their third child and only daughter ahead of schedule so that he could attend the event.

"We induced early to make sure we were here today. So, I would not be here if it wasn't for her and that decision," Kinne said. "A real coach's wife decision right there."

This upcoming season will be Kinne's second with the Bobcats after he took the top job in December 2022. His previous credits include coaching at Incarnate Word, serving as offensive coordinator at Hawaii and UCF and serving as an offensive analyst at SMU, Arkansas and for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Last season, Kinne led the Bobcats to their first bowl eligibility in nearly 10 years. They defeated Rice in the First Responder Bowl in December.

As for that baby girl, Summer Kinne posted on July 18 that they had welcomed Swayze Jo Kinne to the family. Big brothers Lincoln and Cooper are big fans of the newest addition.

More from GJ Kinne at SBC Media Days

Also at Media Days on Wednesday, GJ Kinne raised the question of why no Texas State offensive linemen were on preseason All-SBC teams.

"That's one thing I'm always getting confused about," he said. "When I was at UIW, we led the country in offense. Last year in the Sun Belt, had the No. 1 offense in the Sun Belt, No. 1 rushing attack, and we never have any offensive lineman on preseason lists ... So hopefully that will change at the end of the season because I think we have a really good offensive line."
