AUSTIN, Texas — Football fans now have a season to hold them over through the spring. The Alliance of American Football league has started their season and is littered with familiar names of players who have spent time on NFL rosters.
This past weekend’s opening weekend was highlighted by a pair of former Texas Longhorns.
Quarterback for Orlando Apollos, Garrett Gilbert had a big night bringing in a pass on a trick play.
Just like Nick Foles did for the Eagles on a play in the Super Bowl a year ago called the “Philly Special," Gilbert’s touchdown reception on a throw-back pass to the quarterback and was referred to as the “Orlando Special”.
Gilbert was named the team’s offensive player of the game.
Gilbert, a state champion quarterback from Lake Travis High School, began his college career at UT before transferring to SMU.
He also earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the New England Patriots practice squad in 2014.
Former Texas Longhorn kicker, Nick Rose was perfect on three field goals attempts in the San Antonio Commanders win inside of the Alamodome against San Diego.
The AAF is a league with a 10-game schedule for each franchise. The teams are comprised of a 75-man roster with a minimum 3 year contracts earning up to $275,000 over the 3 seasons.
