Tiger Woods storms back to earn spot in Sweet 16 of Dell Match Play

His rally began on the ninth hole.

AUSTIN, Texas — Tiger Woods trailed Patrick Cantlay, two down after the first eight holes on the final day of Dell Match Play's pool play.

"I grabbed a little bit of momentum going into the back nine," Woods said.

Woods won the ninth hole setting up a furious comeback on the final nine holes, trailing Cantlay, one down.

Woods evened things up all square after dropping a big putt on the eleventh hole.

Two holes later, Woods dropped another long putt to take the lead, two up.

But the fourteenth hole was much bigger, as was the reaction from the massive gallery.

Woods's furious rally ended on the sixteenth hole when Cantlay conceded the match.

Woods won, 4 and 2.

"I've had fun all three matches. Unfortunately, yesterday didn't pan out how I wanted it, but I'm advancing," Woods said.

Prior to committing to Dell Match Play, Woods said it would benefit him because he was guaranteed three matches in pool play.

"I'm thankful for the format because I'd be going home yesterday, so I get a chance to play tomorrow morning," Woods said.

Due to Brandt Snedeker's 6 and 4 loss to Aaron Wise, Woods won his pool and advanced to the Sweet 16 round, which begins Saturday morning.

Woods will face Rory McIlroy Saturday morning, who defeated Matthew Fitzpatrick, 4 and 2.
