LIBERTY HILL, Texas — A forward pass is a rare site to see when watching Liberty Hill play tackle football.
The Panthers have only attempted 32 passes through 13 games -- but there's a good reason for that.
"Being on the other side of our offense is confusing," Liberty Hill running back Kyle Harrison said.
That's an understatement. Just ask the Panthers' defense, who face this offense each day in practice.
"The speed and quickness by our offensive line and the backs, you realize you're over here and you're over here, and it's too late by then," Liberty Hill linebacker Brenden Ketchem said.
Liberty Hill's trademark slot tee offense has been known to confuse videographers with all of the fakes and misdirection blocking. You just never known who has the ball.
It's old-school smashmouth football. Liberty Hill does it better than anyone in the state, averaging over 55 points per game.
In fact, the Panthers have over 6,600 yards rushing this season.
Harrison leads all Panther rushers with 37 touchdowns this season alone. Yes, 37. That's not a typo.
It's a product of a system implemented before the current Panthers were born, by former Liberty Hill head coach Jerry Vance.
He won back-to-back state titles with the slot tee offense and Vance, who retired two years ago, was the mentor of the Panthers' current head coach.
"We have a lot of coaches come visit, and I tell them, 'If you want to ask about the slot, I think I know it,'" Coach Jeff Walker said. "'If you want to know anything else, don't ask me.'"
The slot tee is an equalizer against much faster and bigger teams, like their state semifinal opponent, Carthage.
Liberty Hill faces Carthage on Friday night in a class 4A division state semifinal in Cypress, Texas.
