AUSTIN, Texas — Just under two months after his firing at UT, former Longhorns baseball coach David Pierce won't be going far away for his new gig.
On Wednesday, Texas State head baseball coach Steven Trout announced that Pierce had been hired to join his staff with the Bobcats ahead of the 2025 season. Pierce's official role will be assistant to the head coach, which will include overseeing activities of the baseball program both on and off the field.
"We couldn't be more excited to have David join our staff. The wealth of knowledge and experience he will bring to our program will be a huge asset in all areas," Trout said. "He is a proven winner and has been successful his entire career. We look forward to him helping us win in San Marcos."
The 61-year-old Pierce served as the Longhorns head coach for eight seasons, from 2017 until his firing after the 2024 season. He compiled a 297-162 record, won three Big 12 championships and led the Longhorns to three College World Series appearances.
Over the course of his entire head coaching career, Pierce has accumulated a 494-271 record that included a 121-63 mark in three seasons at Sam Houston State and a 76-46 record in two years at Tulane. He has twice been named the ABCA Regional, Big 12 and Southland Conference Coach of the Year. In 2018, Baseball America selected him as the National Coach of the Year after he led the Longhorns back to the College World Series for the first time in four years.
Less than 48 hours after Pierce was fired by Texas, he was replaced by former Texas A&M Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle, in a move that drew controversy for the perceived way it was handled.
