The real-life sport based on the fantasy sport Quidditch is having its championship in Round Rock

Round Rock will host more than 60 college and club teams for the US Quadball Cup 2024.

AUSTIN, Texas — The sport based off the fantasy sport Quidditch from the Harry Potter series will hold its championship in Round Rock this year.

The Round Rock Multipurpose Complex will host the US Quadball Cup 2024 on April 13 and 14. More than 60 college and club teams are expected to compete at the event.

Quadball is a mixed-gender, full-contact sport played by over 600 teams in 40 countries. The rules were originally adapted from the Harry Potter book series by students at Middlebury College in Vermont and incorporate a mix of elements from rugby, dodgeball and flag football. The name of the sport changed from Quidditch to Quadball in 2022 after the sport's governing bodies wanted to distance it from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, as well as create better opportunities for sponsorship and broadcast deals. The sport's new name refers to the number of balls and positions on the field.

“We are so thrilled to be back in Round Rock for our national championship!” said Megan Anderson, the senior director of Membership & Operations for US Quadball. “We are looking forward to introducing Quadball to new fans in the area, and welcoming back members of the local community who have attended before."

College teams competing include the University of Texas San Antonio, Boston University and Arizona State University. Club teams in attendance include Texas Hill Country Heat, Twin Cities Quadball Club and The Warriors. Divisions at the national championship include College D1, College D2, Club Competitive and Open Division. Championships will be awarded in each division.

Round Rock previously hosted the US Quadball Cups in 2018 and 2019, as well as hosted the 2022-23 season Southwest Regional Championship.
