SAN ANTONIO — According to a report from ESPN's Shams Charania, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich will not be on the court when the team faces the Clippers and the Rockets on their two-game road trip due to an undisclosed medical issue.
Assistant coach Mitch Johnson will be named interim head coach indefinitely.
Popovich, 75, did not coach in the team's recent home win over Minnesota, and Johnson took the head coaching reins.
“He’s not feeling well. This has happened before. I think everybody’s just always got to be ready for the next man up.” Johnson said pregame versus Minnesota. “Sometimes people get sick or don’t feel well, or things come up in life. He’s just not feeling well."
It is unknown if there is a timetable for Pop's return to the court.
Popovich is the NBA’s leader with 1,390 coaching wins and five NBA titles. He is in his 29th season and has won three NBA Coach of the Year awards.
