AUSTIN, Texas — A Texas icon is stepping down from the NFL for good.
Former University of Texas at Austin Longhorns football quarterback Colt McCoy announced his official retirement from professional football.
"Thank you football. Excited for the next chapter," he posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.
Although he might no longer be present on the field, McCoy is transitioning his talents to NBC Sports, where he'll take on a new role as a game analyst covering Big Ten College football starting Sept. 7.
Following the announcement, the 37-year-old received support on social media, including from his alma mater.
"A true Longhorn legend," Texas Football posted to X. "Congrats on a great career and enjoy your retirement."
Colt McCoy's career
The football star began his career back in 2006 as a redshirt freshman with UT Austin, where he started in all 13 games of the season.
McCoy continued to play for the Longhorns until 2009, becoming a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist and attaining 45 wins -an NCAA record - during his time at the university.
After graduating from UT Austin, the Tuscola, Texas, native went on to play for the Cleveland Browns in 2010, then the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Commanders, New York Giants and most recently, the Arizona Cardinals.
His 14-year, 56-game-long NFL career included 34 touchdowns and 32 interceptions total.
Since announcing his departure from the NFL, McCoy also posted a video to YouTube detailing his story, where he discussed his thoughts about his journey thus far.
"I love football. It's a beautiful sport, it's a great game and it's taught me so much about my make-up, my DNA, my competitive spirit," he said.
"I'm very, very, very appreciative of it. I hate that I can't play anymore but I'm also very appreciate for what the good Lord allowed me to do and how long I got to play."
McCoy will appear on "Big Ten Saturday Night" next month.
