AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: The above video is from when Kamie Ethridge's jersey was retired in September 2019.
Legendary University of Texas women's basketball player Clarissa Davis had her No. 24 jersey retired on a very fitting day – March 8, International Women's Day.
Davis' jersey was retired in a pre-game ceremony ahead of the final game of the women's basketball season against Oklahoma State University at the Frank Erwin Center.
Davis – now Davis-Wrightsil – is only the second female Texas athlete to have her jersey retired. Before her was women's basketball player Kamie Ethridge, whose No. 33 jersey was retired during UT's football game against LSU in September 2019.
Legendary Longhorns pitcher Cat Osterman will become No. 3 – and the first-ever UT softball player to have a jersey retired – when her No. 8 jersey is officially retired on March 25 as part of ceremonies surrounding UT softball's home game against UT Arlington.
According to UT, Davis played for the Longhorns from 1985-86 to 1988-89. During those years, Texas compiled a record of 124-10, winning the 1986 National Championship, advancing to the 1987 NCAA Final Four and making two additional NCAA Elite Eight appearances. UT said Davis was the 1986 NCAA Final Four's Most Valuable Player, totaling 56 points and 32 rebounds in the two-game span. The Longhorns also won the Southwest Conference Championship every year Davis was at UT.
Davis has a number of accolades to her name. According to UT, she was a two-time All-American for Texas; won the Wade Trophy and USBWA's National Player of the Year Award in 1989; was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006; and was a member of the inaugural class of the UT Athletics Hall of Honor in 2000.
