Longhorns' offense becoming more explosive in spring camp

Last season, UT was one of two football bowl subdivision programs whose offenses didn't gain 50-plus yards on a single play from scrimmage.

AUSTIN, Texas — Spring camp is 11 days away from ending, with the spring game scheduled for Saturday, April 13.

And the Longhorns' offense appears to be making significant strides.

"I feel like we have way more explosive plays, way more guys running down the field," Texas running back Keaontay Ingram said.

Last Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage had several explosive plays, evidenced by the large chunks of yardage gained by receivers Malcolm Epps and Brennan Eagles.

The continued development began with quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who is the unquestioned leader of the team.

"I love the way Sam plays the game, " UT offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi said.

So this trend of increased explosive plays by the Ehlinger-led offense is encouraging.

In 2018, UT averaged 31 points per game and only scored 66 points all season in the fourth quarter.

"Man, you see this improvement, especially this early, and you see these types of characteristics this early, it speaks volumes," Ingram said.

The early enrollee freshmen have contributed to the offensive growth – both Bru McCoy and Jordan Whittington.

When the team was asked which of those two young playmakers has given the defense the most during spring camp, the answer was the Cuero Gobbler, Whittington.

"He's lightning-fast, and we end up chasing him more often than we should," Texas linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch said.

Other notable nuggets after UT's practice Tuesday morning:

Sam Ehlinger will be "full go" for practice Wednesday and was back at practice Tuesday after dealing with an undisclosed issue.

Defensive back B.J. Foster was back at practice, and defensive back Chris Brown will return next week after dealing with a lung issue.

And running back Kirk Johnson was out due to a "stinger."
