37 Longhorns to compete at 2024 Paris Olympics

Thirty athletes and seven coaches will be participating in this summer's Olympic games.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns will be well represented this summer in Paris.

A total of 37 athletes and coaches affiliated with the University of Texas will participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, which starts on Friday, July 26.

The 30 athletes competing is the largest delegation UT has sent to an Olympics, besting the previous record of 29 who were sent to the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Current or former Longhorns will compete in 12 different sports:

  • Men's Golf
  • Women's Golf
  • Rowing
  • Soccer
  • Men's Swimming and Diving
  • Women's Swimming and Diving
  • Women's Tennis
  • Men's Track and Field
  • Women's Track and Field
  • Volleyball

In addition, UT athletes will represent 16 different countries:

  • France
  • Germany
  • Great Britain
  • Haiti
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Saint Lucia
  • Serbia
  • South Sudan
  • Taiwan

A total of 14 athletes and three coaches with UT ties will represent Team USA. The program ranks in a tie for fifth among NCAA Division I schools based on the number of athletes competing on the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team, trailing only Stanford (38), UCLA (19), California (17) and USC (16), and is tied with Florida and Penn State, who also have 14.

Events in Men's and Women's Track and Field will have 10 current or former Longhorns competing. Those competing in track and field include two-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser (shot put) and second-time Olympian Tara Davis-Woodhall (long jump), who will represent Team USA. Mariam Abdul-Rashid (100m hurdles) will compete for Canada, and Rhasidat Adeleke (400m, mixed 4x400m relay) will represent Ireland. Julien Alfred (100m, 200m) will compete for Saint Lucia and Emelia Chatfield (100m hurdles) will represent Haiti.

Decathlete Leo Neugebauer will compete for Germany, while the trio of Ackelia Smith (long jump, triple jump), Lanae-Tava Thomas (200m) and 2020 bronze medalist Stacey-Ann Williams (400m, 4x400m relay) will represent Jamaica.

Men's and Women's Swimming will have also have 10 current or former Longhorns competing, including six on Team USA. Carson Foster (200 IM, 400 IM), sophomore Erin Gemmell (200 free, 4x200 free relay), senior Luke Hobson (200 free, 4x200 free relay), senior David Johnston (1500 free, open water 10K), second-time Olympian Drew Kibler (4x200 free relay) and sophomore Aaron Shackell (400 free) will represent the U.S.

Sophomore Angie Coe (200 IM) will compete for Taiwan; Caspar Corbeau (100 breast, 200 breast) will represent The Netherlands; senior Anna Elendt (100 breast, 4x100 medley relay) will compete for Germany and junior Hubert Kos (200 back, 100 fly, 100 back) will represent Hungary.

Elsewhere, other notable athletes competing include former Longhorn and three-time NBA champion Kevin Durant, who will be competing in his fourth Olympic games in an effort to win an astonishing fourth gold medal, and Scottie Scheffler, the current top-ranked golfer in the world who's already won the Players Championship and Masters Tournament so far in 2024.

Tennis player Lulu Sun, who recently reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, will represent her native New Zealand.

Second-time Olympian Alison Gibson (women's 3-meter springboard diving), 2020 gold medalist Chiaka Ogbogu (women's indoor volleyball) and Rowing's duo of Kaitlin Knifton (women's four) and Daisy Mazzio-Manson (women's four) will also compete for Team USA.

Second-time Olympian Yvonne Anderson (women's basketball) will represent Serbia; 2020 gold medalist Julia Grosso (soccer) will compete for Canada and Sara Kouskova (women's golf) will represent the Czech Republic.

A trio of current Texas coaches will work for Team USA, including Carol Capitani (assistant coach for swimming), Matt Scoggin (coaching staff for diving) and Erik Sullivan (team leader for men's volleyball).

Bob Bowman (swimming) will work as a National Team Coach for France, while Royal Ivey (men's basketball) will serve as the Head Coach for South Sudan. Edrick Floréal (track and field) will work on the coaching staffs for Great Britain, Ireland and Saint Lucia, and Jim Garnham (track and field) will serve as an assistant coach for Germany.

Entering the 2024 Paris Games, a total of 162 UT athletes have participated in the Olympics and captured a total of 156 medals (89 gold, 43 silver and 24 bronze).
