AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin (UT) rowing team is celebrating after winning their third national championship over a four-year long period.
On Sunday, the team competed in Bethel, Ohio, against a range of colleges and universities from across the country.
Led by head coach Dave O'Neill, the Longhorns received the NCAA Championship title in the Four, II Eight and I Eight categories.
UT is one of only three total universities to reach this accomplishment in four years, along with Brown University and Ohio State University.
"That was spectacular racing by all three crews, and I could not be more proud of this team," O'Neill said. "They did something very special today, and it all started with our first team meeting back in August. I give them a lot of credit for buying in, doing the work and making each other better every step of the way."
Starting off the winning streak was the Four, who ended their race at 6:59.555 against Princeton, Stanford, Yale, the University of Tennessee and the University of Washington.
Next up, the Second Eight took second place with an 6:20.320 end time, with Stanford in first at 6:18.156. Tennessee, Washington, Yale and Princeton followed.
The I Eight took the team's final lead with a finish time of 6:09.920, followed by Stanford, Tennessee, Princeton, Brown and Washington.
In total, the Longhorns received 130 points, marking a historic victory.
After Sunday's success, UT Austin has won a total of 66 National Championships throughout its 141-year history. This is the fourth straight year that UT has won multiple national titles in the same academic year.
