UT baseball will open the season with a new top gun on the mound

Texas Longhorns Baseball will open the season in Louisianna with sophomore pitcher Bryce Edler.

AUSTIN, Texas — The defending Big 12 baseball champions open the season with lofty goals. As usual, the Longhorns incorporate Omaha, College World Series, into their goals.

Texas opens the season away from the friendly confines of Disch-Falk Field. UT travels to Lafayette, Louisiana, to face the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.

The Longhorns will do so with a revamped pitching staff. Gone are Nolan Kingham and Chase Shugart, as both report to spring training soon.

Sophomore Bryce Edler will receive the nod as UT's opening night starter on Friday in Lafayette.

"It's what I worked for the past couple of years. Hopefully have a good showing and a good weekend," said Elder.

Texas head coach David Pierce said Elder has a cerebral approach to the game and has a four-pitch mix.

When asked to describe Elder's personality, Pierce said, "He's reserved and has a little redneck in him."

Elder is a native of Decatur, Texas. He is a 6-feet-1-inch, 230-pound, right-handed pitcher who posted a 6-1 record in 2018 as a reliever pitcher out of the bullpen.

UT opens the season in Lafayette Friday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
