AUSTIN, Texas — Tom Herman may be missing at least a couple of familiar faces in his quarterback room this spring.
Junior quarterback Shane Buechele is exploring his transfer options.
KVUE confirmed with Texas Thursday that Buechele has entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal. Buechele will have two years of eligibility remaining.
The true freshman quarterbacks Cameron Rising and Casey Thompson both entered their names into the transfer portal back in December.
On Wednesday, there were conflicting reports about Thompson, who is the son of former Oklahoma great Charles Thompson. On Twitter, Thompson denied any reports that he told the UT coaching staff that he will remain in Austin.
Thompson tweeted, "I haven't made a decision and the reports did not come from me."
That was the reasoning for his "rumor has it" tweet.
The same tweet which fellow redshirt freshman signal caller, Cameron Rising attached on Twitter as well.
Speaking of Rising, there is nothing definitive about where he will play quarterback next season, but Brian Davis with our partners at the Austin American-Statesman confirmed with UT that Rising is, "no longer with the program and will transfer."
What does this mean?
Each of these quarterbacks want to play and believe they can contribute. But, there is a junior-to-be quarterback named Sam Ehlinger who has a strong grip onto the starting job.
Texas did sign one quarterback during the early signing period back in December: Roschon Johnson from Port Neches-Groves.
If the two freshman and Buechele transfer, Sam Ehlinger and freshman Treymayne Prudhomme would be the only quarterbacks currently on the roster.
