Texas Longhorns to represent USA in 2024 Summer Olympics

The athletes will represent Team USA after winning the U.S. Olympic Trials.

AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: A previous version of this article stated that former Longhorn Jake Foster would be competing in the Olympics. However, it is his brother, former Longhorn Carson Foster, who will be competing in the Games.

Texas will be soon be represented on the international stage as the 2024 Summer Olympics get underway.

A current University of Texas at Austin swimmer, as well as an alumnus, will compete with Team USA from July 27 through Aug. 4 in Paris, France.

Aaron Shackell, 19, and Carson Foster, 22, earned spots on the team Saturday during the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Upcoming sophomore Shackell finished in first place in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:45.46 – the fourth-fastest completion in history.

Placing just behind Shackell was Kieran Smith at 3:45.76 and David Johnston with a final time of 3:46.19.

Foster posted a time of 4:07.64 to claim the victory in the 400 IM final. He was followed in second place by Chase Kalisz with a time of 4:09.39.

This isn't the first time UT athletes have participated in the Games.

During the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, 28 past and present Longhorns joined the competition, earning seven medals – five gold, three silver and one bronze.

Of the medalists, one was a swimmer who participated in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle race. Two divers and a diving coach also took part in the international event.

Since the first Olympic Games almost 100 years ago, UT competitors have earned 153 total medals. Since 1983, the university has won at least one gold medal during the Summer Olympics.

Soon, the newest group of Longhorn Olympians will compete to add to UT's history.
