AUSTIN, Texas — Texas is a state dominated by football, basketball, and baseball, but soccer is gradually becoming a major player.
"If you're one of the better (soccer) players growing up, you want to move to get the most exposure and go to Houston or Dallas," said Austin Bold FC's Kris Tyrpak. "If we have our own professional team here, they don't necessarily have to move."
Tyrpak knows all too well the rigors of having to move for exposure, as he did when was younger growing up in Dripping Springs.
A product of the Austin Capitals Soccer Club and Lonestar Soccer Club, Tyrpak was able to continue his collegiate career in Texas at Houston Baptist University.
Tyrpak's professional career included a stint with the former Austin Aztex and recently with San Antonio FC in 2017. Typrak was the team's second leading scorer.
Typak never ever imagined it was possible to return home to play professionally.
But, since it is reality now, the season opener is March 9 at Las Vegas, and Tyrpak expects the Bold franchise to grow its brand with a simple formula.
"To be role models on and off the field," said Tyrpak. "If we can come out play attractive soccer and score goals and interact in the community well, I don't see a reason why we can't co-exist."
Co-existing in the same market with the Major League Soccer's 27th franchise, Austin FC, which is expected to begin play in Austin in 2021.
Austin Bold FC is a United Soccer League franchise, which is second-tier level professional soccer.
"It's one underneath the MLS," said Sonny Guadarrama, another local product on the Bold FC roster.
Guadarrama was a three-time district MVP while playing at Cedar Park High School.
"I think Austin is a great city. I love it here," said Guadarrama.
Like Tyrpak, the Cedar Park High School graduate spent a portion of his professional soccer career with San Antonio FC.
But, it's home sweet home for the 31-year-old. Guadarrama wished the presence of pro soccer at this level existed in Austin 20 years ago.
During the first Austin Bold FC team meeting, Guadarrama played the role of unofficial Austin Chamber of Commerce president.
"I told the guys that they're coming to a two which is the best city in the United States," said Guadarrama.
One of the nation's finest cities will soon be able to witness an upgrade in professional soccer talent on the Circuit of the America's property and do so with Austin-area grown talent in Tyrpak and Guadarrama.
