Texas A&M legend John David Crow passes away

Crow's family told Texas A&M officials he passed away peacefully around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, surrounded by his wife Carolyn and family.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow died Wednesday evening at 79, the university said.

Crow's family told Texas A&M officials he passed away peacefully around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, surrounded by his wife Carolyn and family.

Crow was a Louisiana native and one of the original "Junction Boys." He was part of the 1956 team that beat UT in Austin.

He won the Heisman Trophy in 1957 and was the second overall selection in the 1958 NFL Draft.

Crow went on to play for the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals (currently the Arizona Cardinals) and San Francisco 49ers.

Crow was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1976, and after retiring returned to Texas A&M to work in the athletics department until 2001.

His family has asked for privacy at this time, and services are pending.
