Texas Roller Derby tryouts are this weekend – no experience necessary

Think you have what it takes to join in on the “Most Entertaining Sport in the World?”

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Roller Derby (TXRD), the full-contact, banked-track roller derby league founded in Austin in 2001 is hosting its bi-annual tryouts on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the Thunderdome located at 1131 South Loop 4 in Buda.

The tryouts are open to female-identifying, non-binary and transgender skaters who are 21 and up. No experience is necessary, and those who make the cut will begin “Roller Rookies,” a three-month program where new skaters are taught the skills they will need to hit the track.

Tryout admission is $10 and you can rent skates and protective gear for an additional $5.

The tryouts are not open to the public. Only those trying out will be admitted to the Thunderdome.

Skaters who attend the tryouts will be evaluated on the following skills:

  • 5 burpees
  • 3 timed Laps
  • T-stop
  • Plow stop
  • Turnaround stop to the inside
  • Single knee fall
  • Double knee fall
  • All-fours fall
  • Baseball slide
  • Jump
  • 360-degree boxturn
  • 180-degree turn into backwards lap
  • Stepping up and down the track

These skills will be demonstrated to applicants beforehand.
