Texas State Baseball Coach Ty Harrington fighting cancer

Ty Harrington is entering his 16th season coaching the Texas State University Bobcat baseball team, and is fighting stage 3 cancer.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State baseball coach Ty Harrington is entering his 16th season as head coach of the Bobcats, and the team is focusing on winning more than baseball games.

"What I learned from the fall was that this group was able to move forward and keep moving and they accepted the challenge of me not being around all the time," Harrington said.

Harrington spent some time away from the team in the fall battling rectal cancer. Harrington had a colonoscopy in August 2014, and doctors found a malignant tumor. Tests showed stage 3 rectal cancer.

He compared the side effects of radiation and chemo to a baseball game.

"There's a lot of good days and there's a lot of crummy days, and it sucks," said Harrington.

Harrington has 4 1/2 weeks of radiation treatments remaining. He plans on being in the dugout for the Bobcats' season opener Feb. 13.

KVUE's Shawn Clynch will have more with Coach Harrington on Jan. 17 on At KVUE Sports at 6:30.
