Texas women's NCAA selection show watch party goes ahead in anticlimactic fashion

"Every year it's a big event and it's something you look forward to, and in particular the freshmen who have never experienced it before."

AUSTIN, Texas — The NCAA selection show is an event college basketball teams who feel they will make the NCAA Tournament field anticipate.

But women's college basketball teams anticipating Monday night's women's NCAA Tournament selection show experienced a first.

"Are you kidding me?" said Texas head coach Karen Aston.

That was Aston's reaction when she was informed ESPN U accidentally revealed the women's NCAA Tournament field and the match-ups two and a half hours prior to the selection show.

The error was made on-air during an ESPN U men's college basketball discussion about the men's NCAA Tournament field, which was revealed on Sunday. Graphics of the women's NCAA Tournament field were used instead.

Texas earned the seven seed in the Portland, Oregon tegion and will face the 10 seed, Indiana, in Eugene, Oregon on Friday.

"Obviously for the adults it's not that big of a deal," said Aston. "I'm disappointed for our players. Every year it's always a very big event and it's something you look forward to in particular the freshman who've never experienced it."

Despite the mistake by ESPN U, the selection show watch party continued on ESPN2, and Texas women's basketball fans joined the Longhorns to see their name revealed in the brackets.

"Getting into the tournament is an honor," said UT center Jatarie White.

UT will begin the March Madness run in Oregon on the University of Oregon's home floor against Indiana. If the Texas women win, they'll more than likely face Oregon, who host Portland State in the first round.

"I think we're capable of making a deep run," said Texas guard, Danni Williams.

"These last couple of games that we've had we finally put it all together. We're playing really well together."

Another positive for Texas is the fact Baylor and UConn are not in their region.

But a pair of teams UT faced earlier this season are No. 1 seeded, Mississippi State, and 11th seeded, Quinnipiac. Texas lost to MSU 67-49 and barely beat Quinnipiac, 56-55.
