AUSTIN, Texas — Currently, Lake Travis water levels sit at just over 44%.
When boaters hit Lake Travis, Lazy Daze Boat Rentals owner Kenny Schmidlin has noticed the low levels have caused much deeper issues.
"People are hitting rocks that you can't see, not knowing the water. If you don't know the water, there could be rocks just a foot down and you won't even see it. And people hit the rocks, and that's when it'll cause the damage," Schmidlin said.
Schmidlin said at least two of his propellers have already been damaged. Each are worth over $100, and even further damage on a boat can leave a dent in the wallet.
"These are a couple hundred dollars, but the internal damage [of the boat] can be thousands of dollars," Schmidlin said.
Schmidlin said the damage to his propellers happened with a captain on board, so if boaters explore the waters without a captain and are in unfamiliar territory, caution is incredibly vital.
"Be aware. Have a spotter if you can have a spotter. If you get close to the rocks or get close to the land, just stay in the middle as much as you can," Schmidlin said.
Schmidlin advised that anyone wanting to rent a boat should hire an experienced captain to make for a safer ride.
"The captains, we're real familiar where to go and what places to go in and out of, where to stay away from," Schmidlin said.
It's taking steps to ensure smooth sailing as another grueling Texas summer continues.
