Overnight closures planned for US 183 northbound near I-35 starting Sunday night

If weather permits, crews will pour the deck for the new northbound US 183 to northbound I-35 flyover during the closures.

AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: The above video is from May 8 when crews imploded part of the 183 flyover.

Drivers who want to travel on northbound US 183 near I-35 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. will have to deal with closures starting Sunday, May 16, if weather permits. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning alternating closures until Thursday.

TxDOT crews will close all northbound US 183 main lanes between the I-35/Lamar Boulevard exit and I-35 starting Sunday at 9 p.m. to pour the deck for the new northbound US 183 to northbound I-35 flyover. Crews will divert northbound traffic to the I-35/Lamar Boulevard exit and follow the frontage road to access the northbound US 183 main lanes after Georgian Drive. All lanes are expected to open by 5 a.m. Monday.

TxDOT shared a map that shows the detour drivers will use Sunday night.

Alternating closures are scheduled for the main lanes and frontage road of Northbound US 183 between the I-35/Lamar Boulevard exit and I-35 Monday through Thursday nights as needed. The alternating closures will begin at 9 p.m. each night. When the main lanes are closed, drivers will use the detour pictured above. When the frontage road is closed, drivers will use the Norwood Park Boulevard entrance ramp and follow the main lanes to access the frontage road at the Ohlen Road/Payton Gin Road exit. All lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. each day.

These closures are part of the $124.2 million Texas Clear Lanes project that began construction in 2018. It's expected to be finished late this year.
