Police identify 2 killed in northeast Austin crash on U.S. 290

Austin police officers responded to the scene just before 4 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29.

AUSTIN, Texas — Police have identified two people killed in a northeast Austin crash on U.S. 290 on Friday, Jan. 29.

Police said driver and passenger Jay Ochoa, 20, and Juan Sanchez, 19, were killed in the single-car crash in the 9400 block of U.S. 290, near U.S. 183. Austin Police Department officers responded to the scene just before 4 a.m.

The preliminary investigation shows a 2020 Kia Stinger was traveling eastbound in the center lane of traffic and lost control. The car traveled into the outside lane before striking a guardrail and a large cement pillar.

Ochoa and Sanchez were pronounced dead at the scene.

This was Austin's sixth fatal crash of 2021, resulting in seven deaths. At this time in 2020, there were 11 traffic deaths.
